Biography
The Granger Family
Mr. and Mrs. Granger - We know from Hermione that her
parents are dentists. We do know that her parents probably
wouldn't approve of using magic for things like dentistry
(Hermione mentioned this when she had Madam Pomfrey shrink
her teeth to a more normal size than her buckteeth). They
do seem proud of Hermione as they accompany her to Diagon
Alley to purchase school supplies, and allow her to stay
at Hogwarts for Christmas break, or with the Weasleys
for part of the summer.
At
Hogwarts
In the beginning, Hermione came to Hogwarts with the intention
of being a stickler for the rules, this is the reason
that she, at first, did not get along with Harry or Ron.
It wasn't until they rescued her from a troll that they
became fast friends. Hermione, while still thinking that
rules are important, is not as bothered by them now as
she was in the beginning. She will occasionally tell Ron
and Harry off for doing something like illigally visiting
Hogsmeade, but she will just as willingly sneak into Snape's
office and steal supplies.
Hermione
is very studious. She is always the first to perfect a
spell and knows far more about magic than Ron or Harry,
which is saying something considering she is muggle-born!
Her worst fear is not the many ghosts and monsters that
lurk around Hogwarts, but failing an exam! When she was
alone with a Boggart, it turned into Prof. McGonagall
and told her she had failed everything, which resulted
in her screaming and taking several minutes to be calmed
down. Hermione sometimes bites of more than she can chew.
She took on so many classes in her third year at Hogwarts,
she was having to re-do hours to keep up with it all,
and even though she was straining herself far too hard
with her workloads (seeming, after a while, to be acting
a little hysterical) she kept it up. Hermione's speciality
is conjuring up blue, portable, water-proof fires. She
can often be found reading or in the library researching.
Hermione is often quoting 'Hogwarts: A History' and many
other books, and becomes annoyed when the others don't
know all the little facts she does.
Perhaps
as a result of her Muggle upbringing, Hermione has a very
logical approach to magic, regarding it as a science rather
than an art. No doubt those born to wizarding families
and having been surrounded by magic all their lives use
a liberal dose of instinct and feel when spellcasting.
The need for this is very clear in the requirements for
the Patronus Charm, for example, where a channeling of
happy thoughts is vital to the spell's success. Despite
her encyclopedic knowledge of the theory and her success
in exams, these are the elements that Hermione struggles
most with. She actually regards Harry as a more naturally
talented wizard than herself (due to his innate affinity
for magic) while she's had to learn it all by numbers--hence
her suggestion that it is Harry rather than herself who
should head Dumbledore's Army and teach Defense Against
the Dark Arts to the other students in their fifth year.
Throughout the whole last Harry Potter book, Harry Potter
and the Deathly Hallows, Hermione is a valuable help in
Harry Potter's quest to destroy the evil Lord Voldemort.
Hermione and Ron share their first kiss and participate
in the Battle of Hogwarts which ultimately defeats Lord
Voldemort and his totalitarian police state. In a webchat
hosted by her UK publisher, Bloomsbury, J. K. Rowling
confirmed that after the last battle, Hermione was able
to find her parents, and bring them home shortly after
the fall of Voldemort.
After Hogwarts
In
the epilogue, "Nineteen Years Later", Hermione
has married Ron Weasley and they have two children: Rose,
and a younger son, Hugo. On her website, Rowling established
furthermore that Hermione is "pretty high up"
in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and has ensured
the eradication of oppressive, pro pure-blood laws, although
she began her post-Hogwarts career by working in the Department
for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, where
she is instrumental in greatly improving life for house-elves
and their ilk and has "revamped" the Ministry.
Her position is ironic, since she earlier states to Scrimgeour
that she was not looking for a career in Magical Law,
instead intending to "do some good in the world".
